In the constant search for new, exciting flavors to keep your low carb diet plan interesting, the exotic spices star anise.

Star Anise can be an excellent way to add new flavor to an old recipe while providing our bodies with new sources of nutrients at the same time.
Star anise (scientifically named Illicium verum) is a star-shaped spice found commonly in Asian cuisines. It is one of the spices found in the traditional Chinese 5-spice mix, but can also be used individually for its own sweet licorice-like flavors.

Star anise can be used as a ground powder in savory spice mixes, rubs, and seasonings, or dropped whole in a soup or broth for added flavor. The whole star anise is then removed before serving (like a bay leaf).

In addition to its unique sweet and savory flavor profile, star anise is also a great source of nutrients like calcium, selenium, copper, iron, vitamin A, vitamin C, and many B vitamins, which your body needs while on a low carb diet plan. It has also been shown to exhibit antioxidant and antifungal properties, and has recently become the subject of many studies showing its ability to create antibacterial effects against organisms that have become resistant to many common drugs.

Star anise can be added to a low carb diet plan in two different ways: Either by playing up the savory notes in the spice, or the sweet notes. Star anise can be used in savory cooking by incorporating it into beef recipes like stews (drop the whole star into the broth) or roasts (use the ground powder as part of the spice rub). The powder can also be mixed with sugar and cinnamon and mixed into oatmeal, applesauce, or as part of a muffin recipe for a sweet, satisfying treat.

Star anise is a versatile spice that is as nutritious as it is beautiful, and choosing this spice as part of a low carb diet plan will add a touch of the exotic to your everyday lifestyle.
