When following a weight loss diet plan, learning about new diet trends can be an exciting way to keep your daily eating habits fresh and interesting:

Coconut water is one example.

Gaining extreme fame among health-conscious people, it has been touted as “Nature’s Gatorade”.  So what’s in this new miracle sports drink?

It is found laying inside young green coconuts, but unlike coconut milk, which is the pureed high-calorie coconut meat, coconut water has very few calories per serving.  It even has less sugar than regular sports drinks and is full of more nutritional benefits, making it a great choice when following a weight loss diet plan.

It is very high in potassium, in fact one cup of coconut water has more potassium than a banana! Potassium can help prevent muscle cramping from exercise, and is a nutrient that many of us aren’t getting enough of. Drinking this water can help to replenish our electrolyte levels without all of the added sugar of a sports drink.

Coconut water is also full of many compounds with which we’re still unfamiliar. Many compounds called cytokinins can help protect our bodies from high blood pressure, cancer and aging! Studies have also found it contains many antioxidants, including vitamin C, which also protect our cells from damage, leading to increased resistance to disease and aging.

Coconut water is also an excellent source of B-vitamins, which aid in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. It’s also a higher source of minerals like calcium and iron than traditional fruits like oranges, which can be surprising based on its very thin, watery texture. Who knew there was so much packed into this simple, nutty-tasting beverage!

Low in calories and chock-full of body-benefiting nutrients, coconut water deserves the spotlight attention it’s receiving. It has been on the shelves of Asian stores for years, and has finally made its way to mainstream North America. It can enhance your weight loss diet plan by providing a nutty, refreshing treat and boosting your body’s natural defences at the same time.

*Just make sure you’re buying unsweetened, natural coconut water, other wise the drink will be almost as bad as a sugary sports drink.
