Add a Peppery Kick with Watercress

Eating a variety of leafy green vegetables is a staple of any healthy diet, and the fact that these vegetables are incredibly low in calories makes them the perfect choice for a weight loss diet plan. However, becoming

stuck in a rut and eating the same leafy greens everyday can easily become boring, so adding a new vegetable like watercress!

This is an herb found year round near slow moving waterways and springs. It belongs to the Brassicaceae family of vegetables, making it a relative of cabbage and broccoli. It has a peppery, tangy flavor which can add spice to any tossed salad or sandwich.

Watercress is an amazing source of vitamin C, providing higher amounts of vitamin C per serving than many other fruits and vegetables! This antioxidant protects us from cell-damaging free radicals in our environment, helps us absorb more iron from our diet, and boosts our immunity to disease.

Watercress also contains high amounts of other nutrients like vitamin K, vitamin A, and calcium, but the most unique aspect is its own phytonutrient found in its leaves and stems called gluconasturtiin, which gives the spicy flavor. This phytonutrient has been shown to protect our DNA from damage, and therefore can help protect us from many diseases including cancer!

“Consumption of watercress can be linked to a reduced risk of cancer via decreased damage to DNA and possible modulation of antioxidant status by increasing carotenoid concentrations.” -American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

It can be found year round in your local supermarket, and can be stored submerged in water in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Try adding it to salads and sandwiches for a peppery kick, or follow the current dietary trend and add watercress to a vegetable smoothie for an extra nutritional punch.

Whichever way you choose to add it to your weight loss diet plan, you can be sure that not only will your taste buds enjoy the added spice, but your body will enjoy the cancer-fighting boost that comes from watercress’ unique flavor.
